Thoughts from the Crossing Team

Kicking Off With Kenny Logo

Wow! What a day we had yesterday at the Crossing.

We had two Baptisms (Linda Wolf and Kathy Frisby)!

We also kicked off our Small Group season yesterday along with the Bengals Tailgate style!  It isn’t too late to join a small group, visit for nights, times and locations.  As we begin our fall Small Groups, this would be a great time to place your Crossing sign in your yard.  If you would like a yard sign, please see Ken Hudson or Kurt Charlton.

We also started a new sermon series called, Life on Mission.  This promises to be a life changing series for you as well as those all around YOU!

Can I ask a favor of you this week?  The Crossing has offered financial support of $12,000 a year for the next 3 years to help launch a church called Relentless in Raleigh, North Carolina. David Jones and his team are having their 1st service this coming Sunday, September 14, 2014.  Mark and Kim Kilgore and Ken and Melanie Hudson will be there next Sunday to represent The Crossing and show our support.  Would you please join me in praying for Relentless Church throughout the week?  For more information on Relentless visit

Finally, over the next few weeks we will go through the series Life on Mission and build up to our Serve Sunday on October 19th at Williamsburg High School.  We would like to offer and encourage everyone to enjoy a weekly devotion created by The Crossing Staff in order to prepare us for the coming weeks which will lead up to our first ever Crossing family food packing party (packaging hundreds of meals for Haiti and Africa)!

May God speak to you as you enjoy this time with Him. See the devotion below from Kurt Charlton:

The number 40 appears 186 times in the Bible, and the number usually symbolizes a time of trial, testing or preparation. Many times it is in reference to 40 days of preparation. Here are a few examples:

* 40 days of rain when Noah and his family were in the ark (Gen. 7:12).

* Noah waited 40 days before he opened a window after the rain (Gen. 8:6).

* Twice Moses spent 40 days on a mountain in God’s presence (Exod. 24:18; 34:28; Deut. 10:10).

* Spies were sent to view the Promised Land for 40 days (Numbers 13:25).

* Goliath challenged the Israelites for 40 days (1 Samuel 17:16).

* Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness as he prepared for his ministry (Matthew 4:1-2).

* Jesus remained on earth for 40 days after his resurrection (Acts 1:3).

For the next 40 days we will be leading up to a special Serve Sunday event at The Crossing. On October 19 we will have regular services at 9:30am and 11am, but we will be relocating to Williamsburg High School because of a school event at BHS.

During each service, we will be offering a time for The Crossing family to live out our Life on Mission by packing hundreds of meals for families in Haiti and Africa. Leading up to this Serve Sunday, we will be going through 40 days of preparation and fasting. Now don’t worry, we are not going to ask you to starve for the next 40 days. Fasting can mean not eating at all, but it can also mean giving up other things as well.

Each Monday, we will send out a devotional and a challenge for you and your family to participate in throughout the week. We will explain the meaning of a fast and give practical ways that you can participate in a time of prayer and preparation.

For the first week of our 40 day preparation, please spend some time each day reading one of the seven examples of 40 day preparations listed above. Read the stories surrounding the examples and answer these questions:

What do you think was going through the minds of those being tested?

What do you think they may have prayed to God during the 40 days?

How do you think God used the trial period to prepare his people for something big?
