The Vital Thing Your Faith May Be Missing

Sunday we began a new series here at The Crossing called, #BossMode. Why? Because many of us are missing a vital thing in our faith. What is that 'thing'? Awe. Awe at who Jesus is. Awe at who the Father is. Awe at who the Holy Spirit is. Awe at who God is.

"The god of evangelicalism may be tame and tired at times, but the God of the Bible is mighty." - Matt Chandler

We have substituted worshiping the real, One true God for a puny god made in our image. We worship, too often, a god who we have figured out. We sing to a god who likes what we like, who desires to make us happy, who relentless seeks to cater to us. We have utterly failed at worshiping the indescribable God of all that is seen and all that is unseen.

So what shall we do? We must seek to know the all-powerful, glorious God who sits on a throne being worshiped by angels right now. The catch, though, is that part of knowing who God really is, is being awe-struck at the mystery of who He is. In other words, in order to know God, we must know that we cannot grasp Him in His fullness. We are puny. He is mighty. We are finite. He is infinite. We are creatures. He is Creator.

A Passage to Get Us There

[separator type='transparent' normal_full_width='no' pattern_full_width='' color='' thickness='1' up='1' down='0']

Romans 11:33-36 says this:

33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” 35 “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?”

36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Here are a few things we can glean from this passage:

1. When Paul refers to the depth of the riches and wisdom of God, he can simply say, "Oh," he doesn't even seek to quantify them. Why? Because He can't!

2. God's judgments and ways are beyond our ability to search and understand. We aren't even close to His level!

3. Who has known God's mind? No one! No one has had the position of God's mentor. He doesn't need one, nor can He have one, for He is infinitely wiser and infinitely greater than anyone else.

4. There is nothing you or I can give to God that is not already His. He is OWNER of all things, including you and me. Your kids, your money, your time, your home, your story, are His, not yours. That may be a hard pill to swallow, but it's true. Ha. The pill is His, too!

5. The only reason you or I exist is because He created us. You were His idea, not your mommy's or daddy's. You are from Him, for Him, and only have life through Him.

[separator type='transparent' normal_full_width='no' pattern_full_width='' color='' thickness='1' up='1' down='0']

6. Glory. Awe. Shock. It's all His. To Him be it. The glory He deserves is infinitely beyond what we can offer Him. In fact, the glory He deserves can only be given to Him by Him. We must depend on Him in order to properly glorify Him. That'll hurt your head to think on!
