Thoughts from the Crossing Team

5 Years in Review - by Kenny White

In 1845, a Church in Augusta, Georgia, was started. As a tribute to the faith of the founding fathers, the church placed this inscription in the building:

"Men who see the invisible, hear the inaudible, believe the incredible, and think the unthinkable."

5 years ago last Sunday on April 10, 2011, a new church started at the Norlyn Manor in Batavia, Ohio. There was no tribute, plaque or inscription placed on the building, not that we could’ve if we wanted to, we are a portable church after all. However, monument or not, that does not discount the appreciation we have in our hearts towards so many individuals who saw the invisible, heard the inaudible, believed the incredible and thought the unthinkable.

The People

[separator type='transparent' normal_full_width='no' pattern_full_width='' color='' thickness='1' up='1' down='0']

People like Brian and Jenn York, Greg and Karen Wells, these two families were originators of the question- would a new church work out here? They worked as tentmakers (they had full-time jobs And put in a ton of weekly hours) in making the new church a reality, they all served this church in such a sacrificial way, especially in the early days, months and years. Both Brian and Greg are now on staff with 2 fine churches in the area, Mt. Orab Church of Christ and Parkside Christian Church, respectively.

I am also so thankful for the insight, wisdom and counsel of David Roadcup who was the Director of the Center for Church Advancement at Cincinnati Christian University at the time. David is one of the most wise, humble and encouraging men I have ever known. He gave us the confidence to truly pursue this crazy idea; he also later assisted us in getting our Eldership off on the right foot.

The Crossing also has the great people of the River Hills Christian Church in Loveland, Ohio, and their great staff and Lead Pastor(s) Jeff and Teresa Metzger to thank in such a profound way. Their experience, generosity, excellence, culture and unselfish-kingdom mindedness positioned us for the strong foundation that most certainly set us on a course for growth in our area. We were most blessed by their willingness to see the invisible, hear the inaudible, believe the incredible and think the unthinkable.

There are many others that played an important role in getting us started: Lyle and Kyna Baylor, Greg and Karen Bach, Becca Costello, Bob and Lois Santel, Vernon and Denise Green, and Ethan Thomas. I also, have to thank my wife Cindy White and daughters Hannah and Bekah White for not only going along with this but also going All In with this venture, as did the other families kids (Josh, Jacob, Alexa, Ethan, Spencer) they arrived early and stayed late, stuffing bulletins, setting up, etc….

[separator type='transparent' normal_full_width='no' pattern_full_width='' color='' thickness='1' up='1' down='0']

There are so many others, too many to mention, that served in the children’s ministry, 1st Impressions, Worship, set up and tear down (many are still serving in these areas 5 years later – Like Amanda Dunaway, and her sis Tina Perry in our nursery, just to name a few).

Many, Many Parts

It truly takes a Body with many parts to function on a weekly basis, especially in a portable situation.

  • - Last Sunday on our 5 year anniversary, at our 3rd location, Williamsburg HS, we had 577 people in attendance, it was our largest non-Easter attendance to date (Easter this year we had 809, our largest yet)
  • - Last week we also had 4 Baptisms.
  • - On Saturday we had dozens of servants from this church come alongside a family within our church, and together we grieved, celebrated and worshiped the Lord as they buried their 7-year-old child, Camdyn was all of our as well, He will go down in this church’s history as one of the BEST GIFTS this church ever received.
  • - We regularly help support hundreds of families in 3 county school systems with food and supplies.
  • - We have helped send 2 Missionary families go on to the Mission field, we are a major supporter of a new church plant in Raleigh, NC.
  • - We provide scholarships for Seniors at Batavia and Williamsburg.
  • - We have a team that volunteers at the Saul’s Homeless Shelter monthly.
  • - And we support the Christian Help Center in downtown Batavia with financial support, volunteers and annually with their Turkey Crusade and Christmas where they help hundreds of families and their children.

There is so much more that happens that I do not know about, through the community groups, ministry teams and servants of this church body, who regularly and without fanfare or attention, show the love of Jesus any way they can.

The Crossing is a messy church, filled with messy people, led by messy leaders, who are trying to create a meeting with the One who cleans up the mess- Jesus Christ.

So forgive me this week, as I looked back and appreciated what God has done at The Crossing Church (River Hills East) so far, I guess I’m a bit nostalgic. I wanted to APPRECIATE OUR PAST. Forgive me for the many names, I have omitted, or the situations and obvious ministries that have taken place over the last 5 years that I did not highlight.

Today

[separator type='transparent' normal_full_width='no' pattern_full_width='' color='' thickness='1' up='1' down='0']12512453_875930212524960_4664005610171666020_n

I also want to CELEBRATE OUR PRESENT- It may just be me, but I sense our worship is increasing and going to new levels weekly, our children and teen ministries are busting at the seams. We are still being known for our generosity, warmth, acceptance and genuine authenticity. We have had great staff members in our past, and the staff we have right now is extremely talented, dynamic and special.

[separator type='transparent' normal_full_width='no' pattern_full_width='' color='' thickness='1' up='1' down='0']

I also ANTICIPATE THE FUTURE as God continues to write the story of The Crossing, the prologue, and early chapters have been good so far, but the best is yet to come.

[separator type='transparent' normal_full_width='no' pattern_full_width='' color='' thickness='1' up='1' down='0']

I can tell you that we have some BIG things coming, and some HUGE announcements ahead… God is Moving and we want to continue to be where He is heading.

[separator type='transparent' normal_full_width='no' pattern_full_width='' color='' thickness='1' up='1' down='0']

Are you excited? I know am!

[separator type='transparent' normal_full_width='no' pattern_full_width='' color='' thickness='1' up='1' down='0']

Let me close with this…

[separator type='transparent' normal_full_width='no' pattern_full_width='' color='' thickness='1' up='1' down='0']

The second half of Daniel 11:32 tells us that:

[separator type='transparent' normal_full_width='no' pattern_full_width='' color='' thickness='1' up='1' down='0']

"… the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits."

[separator type='transparent' normal_full_width='no' pattern_full_width='' color='' thickness='1' up='1' down='0']

I thank God for the great exploits that have been carried out at The Crossing to date because of those who knew God! They saw the invisible, heard the inaudible, believed the incredible, and dared to think the unthinkable. Many faithful servants got us where we are today, now who is going to get us where God is leading us tomorrow, or 5 years from now? Who is going to carry out the great exploits that are still yet to come?

[separator type='transparent' normal_full_width='no' pattern_full_width='' color='' thickness='1' up='1' down='0']

Is it going to be You?
